Frequently Asked Questions: Big SUP in San Sebastián

Everything your group needs to know before conquering La Concha Bay aboard our Giant Paddle Surf board.

1. What exactly is the Big SUP and how many people fit on the board?
The Big SUP (Giant Stand Up Paddle) is an extra-large paddle surf board specifically designed for team use. Our board can accommodate a maximum of 6 people paddling simultaneously. It is the perfect water activity in San Sebastián for families, groups of friends, bachelor/bachelorette parties, or team building.
2. Is it difficult to keep your balance on a Big SUP board with 6 people?
Surprisingly, no. Because it is a much wider and more voluminous vessel than a solo paddle board, it offers extreme stability. The key lies in coordination and teamwork; once you get into the rhythm of paddling together, navigating the calm waters of Ondarreta is very easy and extremely fun.
3. Can we go to Santa Clara Island on the Big SUP?
Yes! In fact, the route from the Sea School (Ondarreta Beach) to Santa Clara Island is the most popular and recommended trip. Groups move fast, and you'll be able to moor the board near the island (at the designated perimeter buoys) to enjoy a spectacular swim right in the middle of San Sebastián's bay.
4. Is the Big SUP rental suitable for bachelor/bachelorette parties or corporate events?
Absolutely. It is one of the standout group experiences in Donostia. It encourages laughter, synchronization, and camaraderie. For groups larger than 6 people, you can rent our Big SUP board alongside other watercraft (such as kayaks or individual boards) to form your very own fleet in the bay.
5. Can we bring children aboard the Giant Paddle Surf?
Yes, it's an excellent family plan. The minimum age is 6 years old. Children under 16 must always be accompanied and supervised on the board by responsible adults. Because it is so stable, the little ones enjoy it immensely and can sit safely in the center of the board.
6. Is it mandatory to know how to swim to get on the Big SUP?
Yes. It is a strict, non-negotiable, and completely mandatory requirement that every single occupant on the board knows how to swim autonomously, without exceptions. It is a basic maritime safety rule for all our activities at the Sea School.
7. Will all participants wear a life jacket?
Yes, we will provide an approved life jacket in the correct size for each member of the group. Its use is mandatory the entire time you are in the water, regardless of how calm the sea is or the swimming level of the participants.
8. Is there a high risk of flipping over or falling into the water?
Flipping the entire Big SUP board is very difficult due to its enormous buoyancy. Falling into the water individually is possible (and often caused by the laughter and nudging of the group itself!). If someone falls, it's no problem: thanks to the life jacket and the board's height, climbing back on with the help of your teammates is very easy and fast.
9. Can a group of teenagers rent the Big SUP by themselves?
16 and 17-year-olds can rent and do the activity autonomously, as long as they all provide a signed authorization from their parents or legal guardians (adults). Children under 16 cannot go alone; they require at least one adult on board with them.
10. What equipment is exactly included in the price?
The rental price covers absolutely all the technical equipment needed for the group: the Big SUP board (for 6 people), a paddle adjusted to the size of each occupant, life jackets for everyone, safety instructions, and the mandatory Civil Liability and Accident insurance.
11. Is there a place to leave our backpacks, keys, or clothes while we paddle?
Yes. At the Sea School facilities (Real Club de Tenis de San Sebastián), you will have free access to our secure locker area. You can leave your valuables, backpacks, or dry clothes there with complete peace of mind while you are out at sea.
12. Can we shower after the activity?
Of course. As part of the service, at the end of your group Paddle Surf session, you will have our outdoor showers right at the beach facilities at your disposal, perfect for rinsing off and removing the salt and sand before continuing your day in San Sebastián.
13. What clothes or footwear should we bring?
You only need to bring swimwear (swimsuit/bikini), a towel, and plenty of sunscreen, as you will be highly exposed to the sun. Regarding footwear, Paddle Surfing is usually done barefoot, but if you wish or if you plan to step onto the island, we recommend bringing water shoes (booties). A cap and sunglasses (with a strap) are a very good idea.
14. Is the displayed price per person or for the entire board?
Our rates are for the rental of the complete watercraft. This means the 96 € for the 90-minute session covers all 6 crew members (which breaks down to barely 16 € per person). If you are a member of the Real Club de Tenis de San Sebastián, the price for the whole board is reduced to 80 €.
15. How long do you recommend renting the Big SUP for a group?
While the 90-minute option is great for a first try, the most recommended and requested duration is **2 hours**. This extra time allows you to get the hang of paddling in sync, reach Santa Clara Island at a relaxed pace, enjoy jumping into the water from the board, and return to the coast without constantly checking the clock.
16. How far in advance should we reserve the giant board?
The Big SUP is one of our most exclusive and sought-after activities (especially on summer weekends for groups). Units are very limited, so we recommend making an online reservation weeks in advance. Online reservations close 2 hours before the activity during the summer season.
17. Are there any discounts if a member of the group is a Club member?
Yes. If the person making the reservation and taking responsibility for the rental is an active member of the Real Club de Tenis de San Sebastián, the Member Rate will be applied (e.g., 80 € instead of 96 € for 90 minutes) for the entire vessel, thereby benefiting their whole group.
18. What happens if there are rough seas or rain on the day of our reservation?
Your group's safety is our absolute priority. If the Sea School's technical management determines that the weather conditions (strong waves, storms, high winds) are not safe, the activity will be suspended by the Club. In this case, you will be offered a full refund of the amount or a date change at no cost.
19. Can we cancel the reservation if someone in the group has an unforeseen event?
According to our conditions, the customer is entitled to a full refund only if the cancellation follows the generous timeframe rules. If you cancel between 72h and 24h before the event, there is a 50% penalty. If you cancel with less than 24 hours (or do not show up), 100% of the amount paid is lost, except for officially justified medical reasons, in which case we would issue an annual voucher.
20. What time should we arrive at the Sea School on the day of the activity?
We strongly ask that you be punctual so you can make the most of your time. The entire group must arrive 10 to 15 minutes before the agreed reservation time. We need this margin to distribute life jackets, assign paddles according to heights, and give the essential technical briefing before entering the water.
