Frequently Asked Questions: Kayak Tour and Tximistarri Cove

Everything you need to know to organize your kayak route through La Concha bay safely and clear up any doubts.

1. What is the exact itinerary of the bay kayak tour?
Starting from the Sea School located within the Club itself, the route covers the calm waters of La Concha Bay. The panoramic layout allows you to admire the La Concha Promenade, the Miramar Palace, and the Peine del Viento from the sea, before heading towards the spectacular and unknown Tximistarri cove. Finally, we crown the tour by visiting Santa Clara Island.
2. What is Tximistarri cove and why is it special to visit by kayak?
Tximistarri cove is a small, rocky, and secluded natural spot located on the slopes of Mount Igeldo, just past the Peine del Viento. Getting there by kayak is one of the few ways to access this quiet corner away from the city's hustle and bustle, offering a wild and unique contrast to the urban beaches of Donostia.
3. Can you see Chillida's Peine del Viento from the sea?
Absolutely. One of the greatest attractions of this excursion is the opportunity to admire the iconic Peine del Viento, the masterpiece of sculptor Eduardo Chillida, from an unprecedented and privileged maritime perspective that tourists on land cannot experience.
4. Will we make any stops at Santa Clara Island?
Yes, the journey includes a brief strategic stop at Santa Clara Island. This site (declared a National Historic Interest Center) will serve for resting, taking a well-deserved swim in its transparent waters, and enjoying the frontal views of the city of San Sebastián before returning.
5. How much time will we spend paddling during the two-hour tour?
Out of the 2 total hours of the experience, the initial preparation, equipment distribution, and safety briefing take about 20-30 minutes. The effective navigation and guided paddling time is approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes, plus the resting and swimming time on the island.
6. Do you need previous kayak experience for this tour?
No previous experience is required. This route is specifically designed with a low difficulty level. The waters of La Concha Bay are generally very calm, and the kayaks we use are wide and highly stable, ideal for beginners of all ages.
7. Is it strictly mandatory to know how to swim to participate?
Yes. Although the use of an approved life jacket is mandatory at all times and the probability of capsizing is minimal, knowing how to swim autonomously is an essential requirement due to maritime safety regulations.
8. From what age can children participate in the activity?
The minimum age to do the activity by maneuvering a kayak individually is 10 years old. This is a very family-friendly tour, but minors must have the necessary autonomy to paddle and follow the guide's instructions at sea.
9. Is there a risk of encountering large waves during the excursion?
The entire route takes place inside La Concha Bay and its protected surroundings (such as Tximistarri and Santa Clara). This area is naturally sheltered from the strong Cantabrian swells by Mount Urgull, Mount Igeldo, and the island itself, so the waters are usually very calm.
10. What safety measures does the Real Club de Tenis de San Sebastián include?
We guarantee the highest safety standards: all participants are equipped with certified buoyancy life jackets, the boats are unsinkable, and the group is at all times led and supervised by a certified guide who is an expert in the local maritime environment.
11. Do you provide a wetsuit or should I bring special clothes?
The price includes all the necessary technical equipment, including a wetsuit if the water temperature requires it or if the user requests it. In summer, many users prefer to simply paddle in a swimsuit. You only have to worry about enjoying yourself.
12. What clothes and accessories should I bring from home?
We recommend coming only with your swimsuit (already on or to change here), protective sunscreen to avoid burns caused by the sun's reflection on the water, and a towel to dry off after showering.
13. Are there locker rooms and showers available at the end of the tour?
Yes. Our premium service gives you full access to the Club's locker rooms, where you can enjoy a comforting hot shower and change comfortably before continuing your visit through Donostia.
14. Where can I leave my backpack and mobile phone during the route?
We have a secure locker area in our own facilities next to the Ondarreta ramp. There you can leave your backpack, dry clothes, shoes, and valuables with complete peace of mind while you are on the water.
15. What kind of footwear do you recommend for getting on the kayak and the island?
The ideal footwear is neoprene booties or closed sandals/water shoes that can get wet. Since we are going to disembark on Santa Clara Island (where the terrain is rocky and wet), going completely barefoot can be uncomfortable or slippery.
16. What happens to my booking if it rains or the sea is rough?
The safety of our users is a priority. If weather conditions are adverse and the guide determines it is not safe to sail, the activity will be suspended. In this scenario, we will offer you to reschedule the route for another date or a full refund of the amount paid.
17. How do group rates work?
We offer a scaled pricing system: the more people in the group, the cheaper the per-person rate. Tiers range from exclusive outings for 2 people to large groups of 19 participants, always guaranteeing the highest quality experience.
18. How is the club member discount applied?
The Real Club de Tenis de San Sebastián offers advantageous rates to its members. This reduced rate will strictly apply individually to those group members who can prove their membership status. For the rest of the non-member companions, the general rate will apply.
19. How early should I arrive at the meeting point?
It is essential that you arrive at the Sea School facilities 10 to 15 minutes before the booked time. This punctuality ensures that we can distribute the vests, store belongings, and conduct the technical briefing without cutting into your enjoyment time on the water.
20. Until when can I cancel or modify my booking?
You can withdraw from the services with the right to a partial refund if you notify us between 72h and 24h prior to the start, which incurs a 50% penalty. However, canceling with less than 24 hours' notice, or a no-show on the day of the activity, results in the loss of 100% of the amount paid.
