Frequently Asked Questions: Paddle Surf Tour in San Sebastián

Expert answers to optimize your tourist experience in Donostia. All the information you need about our star Stand Up Paddle route.

1. What is the best paddle surf tour in San Sebastián?
The best guided paddle surf (SUP) tour in Donostia - San Sebastián is the La Concha Bay route departing from the Real Club de Tenis Sea School. For 2 hours, this journey allows you to discover the city from the sea, visiting historical landmarks and culminating with a stop at Santa Clara Island.
2. What do you see during the paddle surf route in La Concha Bay?
During the guided paddle surf tour, you will see iconic monuments and unique natural spots. Entering the bay allows us to observe Chillida's Comb of the Wind, the architecture of Miramar Palace, and the full panoramic view of the famous La Concha Promenade from a privileged perspective on the water.
3. Is there a stop at Santa Clara Island during the SUP tour?
Yes, the excursion includes a strategic stop at Santa Clara Island, declared a Historic Center of National Interest. We will take a short break there so you can swim, enjoy a refreshment, and admire the Donostia coastline (you can spot the famous flysch) before heading back to the Ondarreta base.
4. Is it difficult to paddle surf in Donostia if I am a beginner?
No, taking the paddle surf tour in La Concha Bay is very easy and suitable for beginners. The waters of the bay are generally calm and protected from the waves of the Cantabrian Sea. Moreover, our certified guides will teach you the basic techniques of balance and paddling before you begin.
5. How long does the complete paddle surf crossing in San Sebastián take?
The guided tour lasts a total of 2 hours. This time is carefully calculated to allow a relaxed paddling pace, the cultural explanation of the points of interest by the guide, and the recreational stop at Santa Clara Island without rushing.
6. Do I need previous experience to do the Stand Up Paddle tour?
Absolutely no previous experience in Stand Up Paddle (SUP) or sailing is required. The tour is designed to be an accessible activity. You only need to meet the requirement of knowing how to swim; our team of professionals will take care of the rest of the technical instruction.
7. Is it mandatory to know how to swim for the guided paddle surf excursion?
Yes, knowing how to swim independently is a strictly mandatory requirement to participate. Although we provide high-buoyancy life jackets and are accompanied by a guide, safety regulations require all participants to be able to manage in the water without assistance.
8. What is the minimum age required for the paddle surf tour in Donostia?
The minimum age allowed to take our paddle surf tour paddling your own board (individually) is 10 years old. It is an excellent activity to do with the family, provided that the minors meet this requirement and come accompanied by an adult.
9. Is the activity safe if I fall off the board into the sea?
Completely safe. Falling into the water is a natural (and fun!) part of learning to paddle surf. Being in the protected bay, wearing the mandatory life jacket, and having the supervision of a certified guide just a few meters away, getting back on the board is a safe and simple process.
10. What does the price of the guided paddle surf route include?
The tour booking is an all-inclusive package. It covers top-quality technical gear (paddle surf board, paddle, leash), a wetsuit, a life jacket, the services of the certified guide, access to hot showers and changing rooms, and accident and civil liability insurance.
11. Are there changing rooms and hot showers after the route?
Yes, this is one of our greatest added values. Unlike other beachfront rentals, when booking the tour with the Real Club de Tenis de San Sebastián you will have full access to our facilities, which includes hot showers and comfortable changing rooms to refresh yourself after the activity.
12. Where do I keep my valuables while I do the SUP tour?
You can store your personal belongings, dry clothes, and backpacks safely in the exclusive locker service of the Club's Sea School. Your gear will be guarded while you focus on enjoying the tour through La Concha Bay.
13. What clothes do you recommend wearing for the paddle surf excursion?
We suggest wearing a comfortable swimsuit, applying high-SPF sunscreen beforehand, and bringing a strap to secure your sunglasses. You do not necessarily need to bring a towel onto the board, but it is useful to leave it in the locker for the shower afterward. For paddling, people usually go barefoot or wear aquatic shoes.
14. Do I have to bring my own wetsuit for the sea route?
You don't need to bring your own. If the temperature of the Cantabrian Sea or the weather requires it, the Sea School will provide you with a sanitized wetsuit in your size, fully included in the price of the activity, ensuring your thermal comfort throughout the two hours.
15. Are there discounts on the paddle surf tour for groups or families?
Yes, we offer tiered pricing based on volume. The base standard price decreases progressively as the group gets larger: we have special brackets if you are 3 to 4 people, 5 to 9 people, or large groups of 10 to 19 people, making the experience much more affordable.
16. What benefits do Real Club de Tenis de San Sebastián members have on the SUP tour?
Active members of the Real Club de Tenis de San Sebastián enjoy exclusive, heavily discounted rates across all group brackets. For example, on a tour for 2 people, the member pays €49.50 compared to the general rate of €62.00. This discount applies exclusively to the main member.
17. Where exactly is the meeting point to start the tour?
The official departure point is the headquarters of the Sea School (Itsas Eskola) of the Real Club de Tenis de San Sebastián, located right on the sea access ramp at the end of Ondarreta Beach. It is the perfect logistical spot to start the historic route towards the Comb of the Wind.
18. What happens to my paddle surf booking if it rains or there are strong waves?
Your safety comes first. In case of adverse weather conditions, storms, or rough seas that compromise the proper development of the tour, the technical management will cancel the departure. We will contact you immediately to offer a full refund of your booking or a free date change.
19. Until when can I cancel my spot on the guided SUP tour?
Our policy requires more than 72 hours' notice to cancel without penalty or to adjust the participants. Cancellations made between 72h and 24h before the start carry a 50% penalty. If you cancel with less than 24 hours' notice, 100% of the paid amount will be lost.
20. What happens if I arrive late to the start of the tour in San Sebastián?
Since this is a guided tour subject to schedules and group dynamics, punctuality is vital. You must arrive 15 minutes early. Failure to show up at the agreed time makes departure impossible and results in the loss of 100% of the booking amount, without the right to a refund.
