Frequently Asked Questions: Learn SUP in San Sebastián

Everything you need to know before getting on the board and starting to paddle through the crystal-clear waters of La Concha Bay.

1. What is Stand Up Paddle (SUP) and why learn in San Sebastián?
Stand Up Paddle (SUP), or paddle surfing, is a water sport where you move standing on a large board using a paddle. Learning in San Sebastián, specifically in La Concha Bay, is ideal because its waters are usually protected from strong waves, creating a safe, calm environment with an unbeatable landscape.
2. Is it difficult to learn Stand Up Paddle if I have never practiced it?
No, it is a very rewarding and accessible sport. With our private beginner class, you will learn the correct posture, how to distribute your weight, and the basic paddling technique. In a few minutes, you will achieve stability and be sailing standing up with confidence.
3. What exactly does your private SUP class consist of?
Our activity is divided into two parts: first, you will enjoy 30 minutes of private class with an expert instructor who will teach you the safety rules and techniques in the water. Immediately after, you will have 1 hour of free time with the equipment to put what you have learned into practice, navigating at your own pace.
4. What methodology do you use to teach Paddle Surfing?
At the Sea School of the Real Club de Tenis we use the IOSUP methodology (International Organization of Stand Up Paddle), an educational standard endorsed by the Spanish Surfing Federation that guarantees progressive, technical, and above all, very safe learning.
5. How many people can participate in a private SUP class?
To ensure the highest quality in teaching and 100% personalized attention from the instructor, private SUP classes have a reduced format with a maximum of three participants per session.
6. Where will we go during the free navigation hour?
During your hour of free paddle, the instructor will indicate the safe navigation zones within La Concha Bay. You will be able to paddle towards Pico del Loro, approach the edges of Santa Clara Island, or enjoy the views of Donostia from the sea.
7. Is it mandatory to know how to swim to do Stand Up Paddle?
Yes, it is a strict and mandatory requirement. Anyone participating in the classes or renting equipment at our sea school must know how to swim independently for basic maritime safety reasons.
8. What is the minimum age to take SUP classes?
To carry out the 'Taste Sup - Learn to paddle on Stand up paddle' activity at the Real Club de Tenis de San Sebastián, the minimum age required is 12 years old.
9. Will I fall into the water a lot during the beginner class?
The goal of the guided class is to minimize falls by teaching you how to manage your balance from minute one. Although falling into the water is a natural and fun part of the learning process, our beginner boards are very wide and stable to make it easy for you.
10. Do I have to wear the life jacket all the time?
Yes. By regulation and for safety, the use of the life jacket and the leash (the cord that connects your ankle to the board) is absolutely mandatory during the entire activity (both in the 30 min of class and in the free hour). We provide you with everything.
11. What technical equipment does the class price include?
You don't have to worry about anything. The price includes: beginner Stand Up Paddle board, paddle sized for you, wetsuit (if the weather requires it), safety leash, life jacket, and the corresponding insurance.
12. What clothes should I wear for my Stand Up Paddle class?
You must bring your own swimsuit or bikini. In addition, we recommend applying sunscreen before the class, bringing a strap to secure your glasses (so you don't lose them if you fall), and a towel to dry off at the end.
13. Where can I keep my backpack, phone, and wallet safely?
At the facilities of our Sea School, you will have a secure locker space at your disposal where you can leave your personal items, shoes, and change of clothes while you are in the water enjoying the SUP.
14. Are there showers to use after the sports activity?
Yes, after handing in your board and paddle, you can use the outdoor shower at the Real Club de Tenis de San Sebastián facilities to wash off the salt and sand before continuing with your day.
15. How much does the private Stand Up Paddle class cost?
The general rate per person for the full 1.5-hour package (which includes 30 minutes of private instruction and 1 hour of free rental) is €28.
16. Are there discounts for members of the Real Club de Tenis de San Sebastián?
Yes. Active members of the Club enjoy an exclusive discounted rate, so the final price of the private SUP class plus the free hour is reduced to €23 per person.
17. How can I book the Paddle Surf class?
All reservations for the directed activities of the Sea School must be processed and paid 100% in advance through our online platform. Until the payment is processed, the reservation is not considered confirmed.
18. What happens if the weather is bad on the day of my SUP class?
If the weather is very adverse or the sea presents dangerous conditions, we will prioritize your safety. In that case, the Club will contact you to reschedule the class or issue a full refund, depending on your preference.
19. Can I cancel or change the time of my reservation if something unexpected comes up?
Yes, but you must give advance notice. Cancellations are allowed up to 48 hours before the start of the activity. Up to two hours before the start, it is possible to reschedule. Less than 2 hours before the start of the activity, it is not possible to cancel or reschedule and 100% of the amount paid will be lost.
20. How early should I arrive at the school on the day of the class?
We ask for British punctuality. You must arrive at the meeting point between 10 and 15 minutes before your reserved time. This allows us to get your wetsuit, equipment, and life jacket ready without taking time away from your valuable 30 minutes of technical class in the water.
